A special filmmaker showcase

Presented with the support of the Bijou Film Board and the University of Iowa Cinematic Arts Department in collaboration with ICDOCS

Larry Gottheim is a key figure in the history and development of American avant-garde cinema in the 1970s. His work often shares the simple structure of the earliest films but also relates to minimal, conceptual, and process art practices. Gottheim is the founder of the extremely influential and first cinema department in the SUNY system at SUNY Binghamton. In this special event, we showcase some of the director's most important work and host the world premiere of his latest piece.

TREE OF KNOWLEDGE
(1980, USA, 60 min.) Dir. Larry Gottheim | 16mm

The final film of Elective Affinities cycle, a documentary centering elements of paranoid conditions juxtaposed with a flow of images of an apple tree in the director's backyard, filmed impulsively, without forethought, the opposite of the static camera of Fog Line. The radical breaking with the previous passivity of the camera has deep psychological dimensions. The elements of sound and image are closely matched to each other, frame by frame.

ENTANGLEMENT
(2022, USA, 24 min.) Dir. Larry Gottheim

An exhilarating cinematic train ride at the speed of sound through a quantum landscape. Music. The dance of death. Do you remember? Phil Spitalny and his All Girl Orchestra. Pianist Alfred Cortot. Deadly serious, but comic.

A PRIVATE ROOM
(2024, USA, 10 min) Dir. Larry Gottheim | World Premiere

The story of quantum Alice and quantum Bob. Words and music.
