From LORD OF THE RINGS to CORALINE, miniature sets have been a staple in filmmaking for over 100 years! In this week-long camp, campers will learn the history of miniature making, study design, and create their own miniature set pieces, including buildings, terrain, and more! Curriculum includes 3D printing. Students will have the option to work on individual or collaborative projects.
*Please note this course will use hot glue and Exacto knives.
Check out this VIDEO for more details on Miniature Construction Camp.
This advanced camp is for students entering grades 6 through 12.
Up to 14 campers may register for the week-long camp. Camp will be held at FilmScene on the Ped Mall, located at 118 E. College in Iowa City.
All technology and supplies included. Each day includes stretching and snack breaks. Two snacks and lunches provided.
Students will take home their miniature creations at the end of camp for use in their at-home filmmaking endeavors.
The Instructor:
This will be Jarrod DeRooi’s 10th summer teaching for FilmScene. His interest in stop motion started in his youth, his early animations and movies all filmed on his prized Sony Handycam. He is overjoyed to get to share his love for stop motion with young artists. Jarrod formerly worked for the Iowa City Community School District but now spends his time outside of camp writing, drawing and running a small organic farm.
Summer is Jarrod’s favorite time of year, and there is no place he would rather spend it than at Film Scene, working with the next generation of filmmakers!

HEALTH AND SAFETY
FilmScene is a mask friendly space and we encourage vaccinations as an effective public health policy. Masks are now at the discretion of students and their families, though they are "Encouraged" for patrons and employees at high risk, with recent exposure to illness, or experiencing mild symptoms.
CANCELLATION POLICY
A deposit is required to secure registration. This deposit/fee is refundable until one month prior to the start date of camp. After that point, deposits are nonrefundable. For example, if camp begins on June 10th, the final day to request a refund is May 10th. Cancellations due to illness will be refunded less the camp deposit. No credits or refunds will be given for cancellations occurring within two business days of the start date of the class; similarly, no credits or refunds will be given once camp sessions begin. If for whatever reason FilmScene must cancel a camp session at any point, full refunds will be given to all registrants.
