Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970)

Directed by Russ Meyer (Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!)

Featuring: Dolly Reed, Edy Williams, Erica Gavin

Week two of our 10 year anniversary celebration features a trip into a delirious kaleidoscope of psychedelia directed by auteur filmmaker Russ Meyer and written by fledgling film critic Roger Ebert.

"Z-man who played SuperWoman in Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.  We could never have found another man who would have done that whole Shakespearean shit and the whole works.  He still to this day believes that I ruined his career." - Russ Meyer, director

"Ebert and Meyer run through a series of gaudy and lurid sexual and romantic encounters - so cheerfully synthetic and hyperbolically exploitational that the movie could be said to have much the same relationship to the permissive Playboy Philosophy that Jayne Mansfield had to Marilyn Monroe." - J. Hoberman & Jonathan Rosenbaum, Midnight Movies

"Meyer gained his highest profile via his relatively gala, and generally brilliant, Hollywood trash satire Beyond the Valley of the Dolls." - The Phantom of the Movies

Fun-loving bombshells Kelly, Casey and Pat have a rock band, and they're headed to Hollywood to make it big.  Thanks to Kelly's well-connected aunt, they soon find themselves at a hedonistic love-in thrown by eccentric music promoter Ronnie "Z-Man" Barzell.  He takes them under his wing, and a new world of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll unfolds.  Superstardom is within reach, if only their newfound distractions don't get in the way!

Free Late Shift at the Grindhouse 10 Year Anniversary zine to the first 20 attendees!

Plus the first episode of Richard (The Disco Exorcist) Griffin's glorious PansyVision.  The totally true, made-up, history of Queer Cinema!

In this pilot episode of PansyVision your host Dick Marlboro goes back to the glitter-covered days of the 1970s to take a look at the hit detective TV program Bear Claw. We then interview the show's producer Evan Roberts, who seems to have snorted ALL the cocaine.
