A Community Collaborations Event

Presented in partnership with Public Space One.

The first 40 ticket buyers have priority in receiving an Observer Kit, which includes an 8" x 8" red wooden square, game manual, foldscope, watercolor set, and more!

Filmmaker Ian Cheney embarks on an experiment in which he brings a series of keen-eyed observers - scientists, artists, a hunter - to locations around the world, often without telling them where they are going, and asks them simply to describe what they see. What unfolds is a deep exploration and celebration of the power of observation: what happens when you find new ways to sense and perceive the world around you? With customary whimsy and a small painted red square that Cheney brings on every journey, the film is an invitation to viewers to find beauty and meaning in even the most quotidian of locales.

There will be three mini-workshops hosted by artists affilliated with Public Space One leading up to the screening:

April 27 - A Composition Walk: the world on four sides

May 14 - Junk Journaling: DIY Scrapbook Exploration

May 18 - A Ground Exploration: Unearthing in a Frame

Immediately after the screening, join Iowa-based sound artist Alex Braidwood for a workshop on sonic observation. Alex will lead an ear cleaning exercise and a collective listening walk to help us foster deeper engagement with our surroundings. Open to all ages.

Alex Braidwood is a sound artist, designer, and educator maintaining a practice exploring issues of sustainability at the intersection of art and science. He has lectured, exhibited, and performed around the world and has been an artist in residence in places like an Australian mountain village, a mid-western field research station, and on Isle Royale National Park. Alex is Director of Artist-in-Residence at Iowa Lakeside Lab, Director of Graphic Design Graduate Education at Iowa State University, Artistic Director at Group Creatives, and President of the World Listening Project.
