Tell your own animated stories with FilmScene! At Animation Camp, campers imagine and create their own animations, totally from scratch. Each day, campers learn the key principles of animation and explore the styles of 2D paper, 3D object, Pixilation, Claymation, and replacement animation and then apply these lessons by making their own videos!

Lead instructor Jarrod DeRooi and an assistant will introduce campers to the powerful Stop Motion Pro software, working hands-on with iPads and a wide range of materials from paper to clay.

Students must register for the grade they are entering in 2024-2025 (please read the full schedule before registering your student):
Grades 5 & 6: June 24-28 / July 8-12 / July 15-19
Grades 3 & 4: August 5-9 / August 12 - 16

Has your child already participated in Animation Camp?

Up to 20 campers per week-long session may register for in-person camp. Camp will be held at FilmScene on the Ped Mall, located at 118 E. College in Iowa City. All technology and supplies included for in-person camp. Each day includes stretching, snack breaks and games. Two snacks and lunches are provided.
Campers can share their work at our Friday “end of camp” showcase, with their work appearing on the big screen.
The Instructor:
This will be Jarrod DeRooi’s 10th summer teaching for FilmScene.  His interest in stop motion started in his youth, his early animations and movies all filmed on his prized Sony Handycam.  He is overjoyed to get to share his love for stop motion with young artists.  Jarrod formerly worked for the Iowa City Community School District but now spends his time outside of camp writing, drawing and running a small organic farm.

Summer is Jarrod’s favorite time of year, and there is no place he would rather spend it than at FilmScene, working with the next generation of filmmakers!

Tuition may be paid in full at time of registration, or in two installments ($200 deposit and $200 balance). The remaining balance must be paid before your camper’s first day of camp. After registration deposit is paid, before your camp begins, please contact Angie at or 319-519-6422 to pay your balance.

New this summer: BEFORE AND AFTER CAMP Care Add-On*. For those parents who need the option to drop their campers off a bit earlier and/or pick them up a bit later in the afternoon, we are adding an extended care period for an additional $60 per week.

Campers can be dropped off starting at 7:30am and picked up as late as 5pm. Early morning drop-off will be available M-F. Late afternoon pick up will be offered M-Th (not available on Fridays). Parents must register and pay for this option in order to participate in the extended hours.

This option will be available during the following weeks only:

  • June 24
  • July 8
  • July 15
  • Aug 5
  • Aug 12

*Please note that this add-on option will only be provided if there is sufficient enrollment. Parents who register for this option will be notified if not enough families sign up and refunds will be processed.

FilmScene is a mask friendly space and we encourage vaccinations as an effective public health policy. Masks are now at the discretion of students and their families, though they are "Encouraged" for patrons and employees at high risk, with recent exposure to illness, or experiencing mild symptoms.
A deposit is required to secure registration. This deposit/fee is refundable until one month prior to the start date of camp. After that point, deposits are nonrefundable. For example, if camp begins on June 10th, the final day to request a refund is May 10th. Cancellations due to illness will be refunded less the camp deposit. No credits or refunds will be given for cancellations occurring within two business days of the start date of the class; similarly, no credits or refunds will be given once camp sessions begin. If for whatever reason FilmScene must cancel a camp session at any point, full refunds will be given to all registrants.
